Hrafnar is the "parent" religious community, open to both men and women. Its meetings focus on worship of the Aesir and Vanir, the ancestors (alfar and disir) and the landspirits, but may include workshops and celebrations as well. Most meetings focus on a specific god or goddess.
Many of our events are pot-luck, and contributions of food and drink are welcome. Hrafnar meets on the second Wednesday of the month, starting at 7:30 p.m., usually in Berkeley. Most meetings are open, but newcomers should contact us first to confirm the topic and location. There is no formal membership, although those who have been attending regularly for several months may volunteer or be asked to take on roles in the rituals. Hrafnar, and the groups associated with it, also have e-lists for announcements and discussion.
An "open" event may be on any of several themes as deemed appropriate by Diana and other Hrafnar members. Longtime Hrafnar attendees may ask to lead the celebrations at these events.
If you have further questions, difficulties, or weird experiences following meetings, contact Diana by e-mail.
Hrafnar's Regular Meeting Calendar:
Our "Feasts" are an adaptation of the usual Asatru sumbel, in which we honor the god/desses with food as well as drink. After each deity has been invoked we sing while the drinking horn goes around. (see Auntie Audhumla's Guide to Norse Feasting).
The Bear Dance, in years where we hold it, is a healing ritual inspired by the lore and traditions of the circumpolar region (especially Scandinavia).
The Skaldic Circle, in years where we hold it, is a round-robin style poetry reading in which all the material should be Germanic or heroic in content and preferably in style. Humorous as well as serious pieces may be performed, but please, no filk.
